October: As I started composing this message, I was travelling north for the start of duck season along with some lucky moose hunters looking forward to the first week of their season. The truck’s thermometer was reading 85 degrees! The gardener in me loves these extended growing seasons with warm temps and lack of frosts. It helps tip the balance of green tomatoes to red in favor of the reds. But, as a long time hunter, it just does not feel right to duck hunt with 80 degree on the thermometer and Ben’s mosquito repellant a required piece of equipment. Climate change is real and it affects us as well as the critters we pursue. On our level, we all need to adapt to the changes and help protect wildlife habitat so they have a chance to adapt as well.
For our October meeting, we have invited the U Maine student scholarship winners to join us and share their backgrounds and aspirations for the future. Perhaps some of them will be the leaders who help learn about moose, deer, great blue herons, etc. and climate change. I hope you can come and meet the students and learn about the Club’s accomplishments in the past month and hear about some future activities.
It is with great sadness that this club has lost a most dedicated and loyal member that any club could have. Paul Colburn passed away this week at the age of 93. He has been a member of this club since 1975, was a Past Master, served on the Board of Directors for several years, Headed the Sportsman Show many years as well. He was at the September meeting and sold meal tickets at the door. He will certainly be missed.
THE FOURTIETH ANNUAL BANGOR GUN SHOW WAS AT ANAH SHRINE – 1404 BROADWAY, BANGOR, MAINE ON SEPTEMBER 9TH & 10TH. THE ATTENDANCE WAS DOWN BY ABOUT 280 PEOPLE FROM LAST YEAR.
