September 2017

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

September – to students and teachers, it means the end of summer and the start of classes – back inside! To outdoor enthusiasts, it means cooler weather, trout and salmon fishing picks up and hunting seasons start – time to get outside and enjoy! I hope to get to a few trout ponds. The bow seat is still open if you are interested.

Our first meeting of the year will be September 7 with a chicken and ribs dinner served at 6:00. Our speaker for the evening will be Danielle D’Auria, wildlife biologist with MEIFW talking about her project with Maine’s Great Blue Herons.

At our board meeting last week, we discussed all of the various club projects and how we can continue the great conservation and education work we have accomplished in the past. One exciting new collaboration will be establishing a closer relationship with the Maine Youth Fish and Game Association located near Old Town with their very nice facility at Pickerel Pond. In the past, we have provided significant financial support to them. In the future, we will look for other ways we can benefit each other. Do you know what they do? Do they know what we do? We have invited their youth board members to our November meeting for a “meet and greet” get together. Be sure you can attend.

Coming up very soon is the annual Gun Show, chaired by Charlie Rumsey. Looking ahead to October, we will have our hunter’s breakfast and clay pigeon breaking contest at the club land in Stetson. Doug and Cindy Merrill have volunteered to organize. Following that is Tony Richards always-filled-to-capacity hunter safety class that we offer for the education and benefit of aspiring hunters in the area.

You have heard it before and you will continue to hear it from this president – all of these activities require volunteers from the club. A few years ago, I stepped down, after 20 years, as organizer of the programs and demonstrations at the sportsman’s show. I needed a break and Jerry Longcore ably took over for me. Now it is time for Jerry to get a break so I will jump back into the fray. I hope everyone will consider what you can do to help the club succeed. You are probably much more capable than you think. I hope to see you at club events and be sure to bring a friend, son, daughter, spouse or grandkid!

Sincerely,
Barry Burgason
